In Memoriam: Lawrence A. Ormord

Larry Ormord

Larry Ormord, long-time supporter and Board Member of the FLW, died Thursday, November 8. He was 74.

Larry was one of the original nine who formed the Friends of Lynn Woods in 1989 and sat on the FLW Executive Board of Directors since its inception.

He designed and constructed the kiosks located at the Great Woods and Pennybrook entrances. He also designed and built the drop boxes located at the rear entrance of the Park House. He refurbished the steel door guarding the entrance to Dungeon Rock and maintained the gates and locks throughout Lynn Woods. He assisted with the planning and construction of the bog bridge through Meeting House Swamp.

Steve Babbitt, former President of the FLW, said, "Larry's political insight will be missed.  He stayed in the background, but accomplished much in his typical stealth-like manner.  It was an honor to work with him."

Larry belonged to the Pine Hill Civic Association and was a regular volunteer for their annual 4th of July festivities. He was a lifelong volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and an active member of the Lynn Historical Society. Larry was formerly active with the Lynn Band Boosters, a former member of  the Lynn Port Authority, and involved in the Office for Children.

Larry is survived by his wife, Abigail (Casson) Ormord, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage; his children Jim Ormord of Billerica and Nancy Hazel-Parrish of Covington, WA; his brother William H. Ormord of Fountain Valley, CA; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Cecil E. Ormord.

Larry was born in Chicago, son of the late J. Arthur and Marion (Sanford) Ormord. He graduated from Lexington High School, where he starred in track. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and attended and worked at MIT in Cambridge. Larry worked as a research engineer for several companies in the Boston area until his retirement in 1995.

Memorial donations can be made to the Yankee Clipper Council, Boy Scouts of America, 36 Amesbury Rd., Haverhill, MA, 01830. His guestbook is available until December 9, 2001, at http://www.legacy.com.

Larry will be deeply missed by the FLW Executive Board. We extend our condolences to his family.
